Gini Pera never experienced a state championship.

That doesn’t mean the New Trier senior tri-captain’s four-year varsity career was a loss.

Trevians coach Pete Collins said she and her classmates — including tri-captains Laura Van Horn and Eileen Harris — made a positive impact on the program and its future.

“Great group,” he said. “I’m really proud of our kids. They came into this year focusing on the team dynamics and building a team that could play together. The seniors took it upon themselves to be leaders and empower their teammates. They did a great job of that.”

New Trier fell short in the state final at Northwestern’s Lakeside Field, losing 11-7 to Loyola. The Trevians, who played in their first title game since 2010, last won a state championship in 2008.

Down 7-5 at the half, the Trevians were buried by four consecutive goals.

“Loyola played a really strong second half,” Collins said. “They clamped down on defense and never let us back into the game. We never got on track.”

Senior Meg Rosinski scored two goals. Kelsey Murray, the state’s leading scorer, finished with three goals, but was shut out in the second half. The Stanford recruit ended her junior season as the program’s record-holder for points, goals and assists, both in the single season and for a career.

New Trier (23-3) lost to Loyola for the second time this season. The Trevians collected impressive wins over top programs, including Ohio’s state champion (Median) and Ohio’s runner-up (Upper Arlington).

“We knew we had to play a really good game against (Loyola),” Collins said. “We beat ourselves the first time we lost. This time, the better team won.

“We still had a great season.”
