Boys Basketball: Waukegan’s Davis stands tall against Trevians, Boehm

Senior Connor Boehm has pretty much carried New Trier on his shoulders for two years. He got his points Friday in Winnetka, but Waukegan sophomore Jerome Davis was able to contain him just enough to give the Bulldogs a 54-51 win.
The victory ties Waukegan and New Trier for first in the Central Suburban League South.
“Defense by Jerome Davis was the biggest reason we won,” Springs said. “Conor Boehm didn’t have the big game he should have had.”
“Jerome Davis did a tremendous job,” Waukegan junior Devonte Taylor said.
“Somehow, get Jerome Davis’ name in the paper,” Ashlaw said.
That’s the kind of praise Davis received for holding Boehm to 15 points and 17 rebounds.
“(Boehm) has historically haunted us,” Ashlaw said. “He’s just a great player.”
Waukegan came out hot, shooting 50 percent (13-for-26) from the field in the first half and led 34-21. New Trier used a 12-0 run to cut the lead to one, but was never able to tie the score.
The Trevians (18-3, 7-1) actually had three chances to tie the game on their last possession. All three were three point shots by Austin Angel.
“I actually fell down on one of them trying to foul him,” Springs said. “And on one of the others I couldn’t even look at it I was so scared it was going in. I play with him in the summer and I know he’s a good shooter.”
Springs led Waukegan (12-8, 7-1) with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Quintin Davis scored 10 and Davis finished with eight points and 10 rebounds. Senior Devonte Taylor scored six, including 2-of-4 crucial free throws in the final 37 seconds.
“We were able to get the shots we wanted at the end,” New Trier coach Scott Fricke said. “I thought the first half lost us the game, no question.”
Angel scored 12 for the Trevians and David Bragiel added 11.
