New Trier remembers Jan Borja

Relationships. Community. Compassion. Those words were used again and again by friends and relatives of Janet Borja at today’s memorial service to explain why she was so special. It was fitting the service was held at New Trier Township High School in Northfield as the freshman campus was Borja’s legacy. Borja, 65, of Glenview, died Saturday from breast cancer. She began working for New Trier in 1970 as a German and Spanish teacher. She advanced to leadership positions and became the first principal of the Northfield school when it reopened in 2001 for freshmen only. “She was the heart and …

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives voted to bar members of Congress and their staff from using inside legislative information in personal stock trading. Members empowered presidents to veto discretionary-spending items providing that both houses of Congress then vote to approve of the rescissions. Members also required new rules for figuring the budgetary impact of federal loan programs. Senators, meanwhile, approved a federal aviation budget, and they advanced a bill to authorize federal road, bridge, transit and highway-safety programs through Sept. 30, 2013.

The bitter cold temperatures that hit the Chicago area over the weekend are expected to give way to snow Monday and then milder weather by the end of the week. Temperatures are expected to climb to 35 degrees on Monday, when there is an 80 percent chance of snow after 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service’s website. About two inches of accumulation is possible by Tuesday morning. Doctors on Tuesday reattached a 4-inch by 8-inch piece of U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk’s skull that was removed to ease swelling in his brain following his Jan. 21 stroke. “The swelling in Senator Kirk’s brain has subsided and this morning we were able to reattach the portion of his skull that had been removed following his stroke,” said Dr. Richard Fessler, neurosurgeon at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and professor of neurological surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “This is an important milestone in his recovery and a step toward the next phase, rehabilitation. Glencoe Park District says its caught up on IMRF payments

The Glencoe Park District, having taken a small temporary break in paying off a sudden debt as its state pension fund consortium took a dive along with the economy, has now caught up. “It’s a good feeling, now that it’s all been paid,” Carol Mensinger, district finance director, said last week. It also prompts good feelings because the $54,000 payment now saves $$27,000 in future interest that would have accrued over the next 20 years. Fifteen active gang members living in Glencoe? That’s not many, but it’s a lot more than Glencoe Police say live here. That’s the number listed in the new Gang Book, however. “To my knowledge there are no gang members living in the community,” Glencoe Public Safety Chief Mike Volling said. “Unless someone has moved in here that I don’t know about.” Jonathan Harlow, the detective who filled out Glencoe’s Chicago Crime Commission surveys for the book, agreed. Glencoe Eagle Scout renovates junior high space

Nick Robbins, a junior at New Trier High School, has helped refine an oasis. The 17-year-old conducted his Eagle Scout project this past summer, renovating the Glencoe Junior High Project space, called the Oasis, at Central School. Nick, who was 16 at the time, began the planning process for his scout project well over six months in advance of the actual job. The planning and approval process alone for an Eagle project is quite extensive requiring roughly 50 hours to complete. Nick’s mission was to help solve noise concerns and paint the Glencoe Junior High Project’s Oasis Student Center space, …

At least 600 people are expected Sunday at the Chicagoland Jewish High School in Deerfield to observe Tu B’Shevat, the celebration of trees. The annual event, which has free admission and is open to everyone, will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1095 Lake Cook Road. The celebration will include free arts and crafts, games and prizes for youngsters, as well as live entertainment, highlighted by the planting of Norway spruce saplings.
