Marian Michael, a shopping tradition for generations of North Shore families, is experiencing a rebirth. In the past 10 months, the clothing store has new owners and a new location in Winnetka. Jennifer and Richard Paden bought the store from Jennifer’s friend Kim Chatain in November. The previous July, Chatain had moved the business from 515 Lincoln to the Laundry Mall at Chestnut and Spruce streets. “My husband and I were in the market to buy something,” said Paden, who previously worked as a preschool and first-grade teacher in Kenilworth and Evanston. Chatain, who was busy with other endeavors, had … ]]> Mon, 21 May 2012 20:48:51 -0500 http://glencoe.suntimes.com/news/12404193-418/expanded-marian-michael-builds-on-history.html http://glencoe.suntimes.com/news/12404193-418/expanded-marian-michael-builds-on-history.html <![CDATA[ Paik awarded scholarship ]]>

For the past 75 years, Bratschi Plumbing has remained a steady presence in the North Shore community. The mom-and-pop business—which celebrated its big anniversary last month—has remained almost entirely family-owned and operated since it first opened in 1937. The Bratschi family—now the Hoza family though marriage—has continued working and living in Winnetka since founder Walter Bratschi moved to the community in the 1930’s to open the business. Over the years, Bratschi Plumbing, located at 801 Oak Street—has been passed down through four family generations and is today operated by Bratschi’s grandsons Phil Hoza III and Al Hoza and his great … ]]> Sat, 26 May 2012 09:18:26 -0500 http://glencoe.suntimes.com/news/12707458-418/bratschi-plumbing-celebrates-75-years.html http://glencoe.suntimes.com/news/12707458-418/bratschi-plumbing-celebrates-75-years.html <![CDATA[ Host exchange students ]]>

America International Exchange, a Chicago-area non-profit, is looking for families on the North Shore to host each of its high-school-aged visitors from Spain. This year’s students will be here July 27-Aug. 18. The students speak English, are insured, and have their own spending money. All they need is a warm bed, meals, and a window to the American way-of-life. It is not necessary to have teens in the family; singles, young families; and seniors also make great host families. Just in time for the beach season, there’s a big problem getting down to the Glencoe beach. The massive stone staircase that spans the steep lower part of the bluff is damaged and closed, as a structural engineer is slated to begin the task of finding out just what’s wrong with it. And there is something wrong with it — something that’s apparently too much for Highland Park’s Manfredini Landscaping & Design to risk repairing, Glencoe Park District executive director Don Van Arsdale said May 15. The firm had been hired to fix some cracks in the side of the staircase, … ]]> Thu, 24 May 2012 03:59:07 -0500 http://glencoe.suntimes.com/news/12685695-418/glencoe-beach-staircase-damaged-closed.html http://glencoe.suntimes.com/news/12685695-418/glencoe-beach-staircase-damaged-closed.html <![CDATA[ Burger Day success ]]>

The Glenview’s Plaza Del Prado McDonald’s and the Winnetka McDonald’s hosted four rival high schools April 21 and 22 that came together joining forces to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana (RMHC-CNI) at Burger Day Nine. Teens from Glenbrook North, Glenbrook South, New Trier and Loyola schools, worked together to raise money through corporate presentations for sponsorships, T-shirt sales and taking orders in the parking lot for one-dollar hamburgers during the event. All money raised went directly to the RMHC-CNI. The 2012 team took Burger Day to a whole new level, raising $56,000, exceeding … ]]> Tue, 22 May 2012 19:48:00 -0500 http://glencoe.suntimes.com/news/12678676-418/burger-day-success.html http://glencoe.suntimes.com/news/12678676-418/burger-day-success.html <![CDATA[ Molitor will bring the music at Winnetka’s Memorial Day ceremony ]]>

Winnetka will honor those who have died while in military service with a parade and ceremony on Memorial Day, a tradition for the past 85 years. Twenty to 25 Scout troops, flag units, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Great Lakes recruits and other groups will march in the parade which will leave from Glendale Avenue and Elm Street at 10 a.m. Monday. They will march east on Elm to the Village Green where a ceremony will be held at the cenotaph to honor service men and women. Allen Molitor has been part of that tradition for 32 years. The Glencoe Village Board is likely to ask voters to approve an infrastructure referendum, and is likely to ask soon. November’s national election doesn’t scare Village President Scott Feldman, though big turnouts can bring wild cards, especially in a conservative community like Glencoe, in a period when the nation is flirting with recession. But with risk, there may be reward. The upside of a quicker vote is, Feldman noted, a chance to take advantage of very low interest rates. “I don’t think that we should be at all afraid of the November election,” he said at a May 17 Village … ]]> Thu, 24 May 2012 03:58:58 -0500 http://glencoe.suntimes.com/news/12700265-418/glencoe-may-place-infrastructure-referendum-on-november-ballot.html http://glencoe.suntimes.com/news/12700265-418/glencoe-may-place-infrastructure-referendum-on-november-ballot.html <![CDATA[ Glencoe news briefs ]]>

The Glencoe Village Board May 17 accepted the recommendation of the village Historic Preservation Commission, and approved a $5,000 contract with Carla Bruni of Chicago for the preparation of a historic architectural survey of village homes. Bruni will, however, depend on the Glencoe Historical Society for the historical-events portion of the survey, while addressing most of her effort to architectural history. The move comes after the recent loss of a historic home at 414 Washington Ave., which was vaguely described on the village’s current list. The Glencoe Patriotic Days committee has a theme again this year for Memorial Day: veterans who have an association with the Glencoe Park District. In recognition of the district’s 100th anniversary, tales of three veterans who had big roles in the district will be told at Veteran’s Memorial Park. Though Memorial Day is supposed to honor U.S. war dead, not veterans, at least one of the three had a big role in the village’s own Memorial Day recognition: Stanton Schuman, the founder of the village’s Patriotic Days Committee, which sponsors the Memorial Day program and parade, and the Fourth of … ]]> Thu, 24 May 2012 03:59:52 -0500 http://glencoe.suntimes.com/news/12688709-418/glencoes-memorial-day-parade.html http://glencoe.suntimes.com/news/12688709-418/glencoes-memorial-day-parade.html
