Relationships. Community. Compassion. Those words were used again and again by friends and relatives of Janet Borja at today’s memorial service to explain why she was so special. It was fitting the service was held at New Trier Township High School in Northfield as the freshman campus was Borja’s legacy. Borja, 65, of Glenview, died Saturday from breast cancer. She began working for New Trier in 1970 as a German and Spanish teacher. Members of the U.S. House of Representatives voted to bar members of Congress and their staff from using inside legislative information in personal stock trading. Members empowered presidents to veto discretionary-spending items providing that both houses of Congress then vote to approve of the rescissions. Members also required new rules for figuring the budgetary impact of federal loan programs. The bitter cold temperatures that hit the Chicago area over the weekend are expected to give way to snow Monday and then milder weather by the end of the week. Temperatures are expected to climb to 35 degrees on Monday, when there is an 80 percent chance of snow after 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service’s website. About two inches of accumulation is possible by Tuesday morning. Doctors on Tuesday reattached a 4-inch by 8-inch piece of U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk’s skull that was removed to ease swelling in his brain following his Jan. 21 stroke. “The swelling in Senator Kirk’s brain has subsided and this morning we were able to reattach the portion of his skull that had been removed following his stroke,” said Dr. Richard Fessler, neurosurgeon at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and professor of neurological surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “This is an important milestone in his recovery and a step toward the next phase, rehabilitation. Nick Robbins, a junior at New Trier High School, has helped refine an oasis. The 17-year-old conducted his Eagle Scout project this past summer, renovating the Glencoe Junior High Project space, called the Oasis, at Central School. Nick, who was 16 at the time, began the planning process for his scout project well over six months in advance of the actual job. The planning and approval process alone for an Eagle project is quite extensive requiring roughly 50 hours to complete.
