Marian Michael, a shopping tradition for generations of North Shore families, is experiencing a rebirth. In the past 10 months, the clothing store has new owners and a new location in Winnetka. Jennifer and Richard Paden bought the store from Jennifer’s friend Kim Chatain in November. The previous July, Chatain had moved the business from 515 Lincoln to the Laundry Mall at Chestnut and Spruce streets. “My husband and I were in the market to buy something,” said Paden, who previously worked as a preschool and first-grade teacher in Kenilworth and Evanston. For the past 75 years, Bratschi Plumbing has remained a steady presence in the North Shore community. America International Exchange, a Chicago-area non-profit, is looking for families on the North Shore to host each of its high-school-aged visitors from Spain. This year’s students will be here July 27-Aug. 18. The students speak English, are insured, and have their own spending money. The North Shore Garden club will hold its biennial garden walk “Garden Fantasies” from 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. June 20 and feature five special gardens in Highland Park, Deerfield and Lake Forest that include inspirational designs filled with beautiful and rare plants. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 on the day of the walk. They will be sold on the patio at the Deerpath Inn in Lake Forest. Just in time for the beach season, there’s a big problem getting down to the Glencoe beach. The massive stone staircase that spans the steep lower part of the bluff is damaged and closed, as a structural engineer is slated to begin the task of finding out just what’s wrong with it. The Glenview’s Plaza Del Prado McDonald’s and the Winnetka McDonald’s hosted four rival high schools April 21 and 22 that came together joining forces to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana (RMHC-CNI) at Burger Day Nine. Teens from Glenbrook North, Glenbrook South, New Trier and Loyola schools, worked together to raise money through corporate presentations for sponsorships, T-shirt sales and taking orders in the parking lot for one-dollar hamburgers during the event. Winnetka will honor those who have died while in military service with a parade and ceremony on Memorial Day, a tradition for the past 85 years. Twenty to 25 Scout troops, flag units, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Great Lakes recruits and other groups will march in the parade which will leave from Glendale Avenue and Elm Street at 10 a.m. Monday. The Glencoe Village Board is likely to ask voters to approve an infrastructure referendum, and is likely to ask soon. November’s national election doesn’t scare Village President Scott Feldman, though big turnouts can bring wild cards, especially in a conservative community like Glencoe, in a period when the nation is flirting with recession. The Glencoe Village Board May 17 accepted the recommendation of the village Historic Preservation Commission, and approved a $5,000 contract with Carla Bruni of Chicago for the preparation of a historic architectural survey of village homes. Bruni will, however, depend on the Glencoe Historical Society for the historical-events portion of the survey, while addressing most of her effort to architectural history. The move comes after the recent loss of a historic home at 414 Washington Ave., which was vaguely described on the village’s current list. The Glencoe Patriotic Days committee has a theme again this year for Memorial Day: veterans who have an association with the Glencoe Park District. In recognition of the district’s 100th anniversary, tales of three veterans who had big roles in the district will be told at Veteran’s Memorial Park.
