The Event: Spring brings with it the promise of new life and those for whom that new life comes in the form of a new puppy may be shocked to learn that 99 percent of pet store puppies come from of puppy mills. To raise awareness about the deplorable conditions and systematic animal cruelty these mills represent, The Puppy Mill Project sprang into action. Since 2009, the Puppy Mill Project has worked to educate the public, successfully closed four stores selling puppy mill animals, and helped rescue more than 200 dogs. The Event: “Stories of Home & Hope” was a fitting title for Connections for the Homeless annual spring gala held May 3 at the Michigan Shores Club in Wilmette. Fundraiser means happy tails for Orphans

The Event: Tails of nearly 600 stray and abandoned animals of Lake and northern Cook counties wagged a little higher on April 22 when more than 190 animal lovers attended the 13th annual Orphans of the Storm benefit at Marriott’s Lincolnshire Resort. For the past 85 years, Orphans has taken in every animal that reached its doorstep, regardless of age, breed or adoptability, in an effort to triumph over the stray and abandoned pet population one animal at a time.
