After months of fits and starts, the Family Promise network of temporary shelters managed last week to set up shop in Glencoe Union Church. Three families — a total of 10 people — stayed in a segment of the newly-converted basement, for a week ending Sunday morning. Green T-shirted walkers will flood the streets of Winnetka Sunday. And the walkers’ “graphic green” shirts will list the warning signs of depression. There are about a half a dozen commercial vacancies in downtown Glencoe. Is that enough to change local law about what the village center looks like? It is, the Glencoe chamber of commerce says: let more non-retail uses set up shop on the ground floor.
