In a month, Sarah Blecher and Rob Gartzman got married, went on a honeymoon, moved, and bought and opened a business.

Sarah and Rob were Evanston Township High School sweethearts who grew up in Evanston. They married June 9, 2012, at the Arches Garden at the Winnetka Community House.

Rob moved to Boulder, Colo., to study at the University of Colorado nearly nine years ago and Sarah followed close behind. Having the wedding in Illinois, though, felt natural for the couple, Sarah said.

“We wanted the day to be low-key and for our friends and family to have fun,” Sarah said. “We really wanted it to be about us and a celebration of our love and commitment.”

Keeping that in mind, the couple didn’t want the wedding to be formal, stuffy or extravagant. Sarah and her family did all do-it-yourself decorations including the floral arrangements using flowers from Flowers Flowers in Evanston. After a stressful mishap with her first wedding dress (the boutique  closed with little notice), Sarah walked down the aisle in a $300 gown from David’s Bridal and sparkly Jimmy Choos peep toe pumps.

The couple opted for a morning wedding with light hors d’oeuvres. Then, they were whisked away in a  Rolls Royce — a surprise from Sarah’s mom — that took them to a romantic dinner at Girl and the Goat and a stay at the Fairmont Hotel downtown.

On the way to the city, Sarah recalled, she and Rob were talking about how they didn’t have a chance to grab a bite to eat or sip a cocktail. The driver overheard and pulled over on Interstate 94, popped open a bottle of Champagne and raised a glass to the happy couple.

They live in Salida, Colo., and run Sweetie’s Bakery & Deli where Rob serves as a line cook for the savory side of the menu and puts to use his bachelor’s degree from the Leeds School of Business at CU. And Sarah works as the bakery’s head pastry chef.
