Fund-raiser at Arlington

Enjoy a day at the races when the Oakton Educational Foundation conducts its annual “Oakton at Arlington” fund-raiser starting at noon Aug. 25 at Arlington Park.

Proceeds from the event support the Student Scholarship Fund.

Guests will enjoy a luncheon buffet and open bar. In addition, there will be a silent auction. Sports fans will find Chicago Cubs and Bears tickets, as well as autographed photos of athletes. Travel aficionados can bid on trips to Las Vegas, London, New York and Paris. Other items include an Xbox Kinect, jewelry, theater tickets and restaurant gift certificates.

Arlington Park is at 2200 W. Euclid Ave., Arlington Heights. Tickets for “Oakton at Arlington” are $85 (general seating) and $100 (window seating). Call the Educational Foundation at (847) 635-1893 for information.

Lifelong learning classes

Residents can enroll in an Oakton Alliance for Lifelong Learning class.

Comprehensive Word Processing (COF A25-C01) — The course covers the use and application of word-processing functions. The 16-week course meets from 6:30-10 p.m. Tuesdays, starting Aug. 21, at Oakton’s Skokie campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave. Course fee is $311.

Sheet Metal Layout and Fabrication (AIR A01-C01) — Learn the methods of laying out and fabricating sheet metal ducts and fittings used in heating and air conditioning installations. The 16-week course meets from 5-10 p.m. Thursdays, starting Aug. 23, at Oakton’s Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road. Course fee is $415.

Bonsai: Beginner Basics and Fundamentals (BOT E37-01) — Discover the principles and techniques to appreciate and participate in the art of bonsai. Each session includes a lecture and assistance with design, styling and wiring. The six-week course meets from 1-4 p.m. Sundays, starting Aug. 26, at the Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Road, Glencoe. Course fee is $179.

Survey of Electronics (ECT A03-C01). Learn the fundamentals of electricity and electronics through experimentation and demonstration. The 15-week course meets from 6-8:50 p.m. Mondays, starting Aug. 27, at Oakton’s Des Plaines campus. Course fee is $281.

Java Programming  (FIT B11-C01) — Develop the knowledge needed to write object-oriented interactive, business-related applications and applets using the Java programming language. The 14-week course meets from 6-9:50 p.m. Mondays, starting Aug. 27, at Oakton’s Des Plaines campus. Course fee is $420.
