Mock voting

Although French citizens have elected François Hollande as their new president, students at the French Institute and parents of children at the French School elected incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy in a mock election. Obviously the French Institute’s results do not count, but it allowed the clients to learn about the voting procedure in France. Whereas voting can be quite complicated in the United States with a variety of different formats, it’s very simple in France. After entering an voting booth the voter selects the candidate of choice by taking one of two ballets available, each with the name of the candidate. This ballot is then deposited in the ballet box at which time an election judge, or in our case, a teacher says “a voté.” One thing is certain—there is no danger of having dangling chads in France!

The French Institute of the North Shore, located in Winnetka, offers practical conversation and culture classes from beginning through advanced levels. The French School is a French immersion preschool and kindergarten. For additional information visit www.FrenchInstituteNS.com or call (847) 501.5800. Summer classes begin June 11.
