Glencoe Police make arrest in boiler-room bandit case

Glencoe Police have made one arrest, and more may be on the way, in the case of a daytime burglary that may have been ongoing last month while a homeowner was in the house.
Norridge Police, acting Friday on a Glencoe warrant, arrested Edward E. Kersting, 30, of 956 Carswell Ave., Elk Grove Village. He was charged with one count of residential burglary, and was held on $50,000 bail, pending a court appearance this week.
Several pieces of the puzzle remain untold by detectives, however, who are still working the case, Public Safety Chief Michael Volling said Monday.
The unusual drama began late the morning of Saturday, May 5, on the 700 block of Bluff Street, when a resident returned home to find a man apparently emerging from the area of her bedroom.
She said he told her that he had come to check the boiler, and that made some sense to her. She had called an Evanston firm for such a check.
So she let him into the basement, and after a short while, he told her that a furnace refit would cost about $500. She turned him down, and he left.
Later, she realized that about $2,500 in jewelry was missing.
A police canvas of the area brought reports from two neighbors, who said they had seen a work van, and a man who emerged from it. He reportedly asked them, among other things, if they knew “Jay” or if any of the parked cars were “Jay’s.”
One neighbor said the van came and left and then returned, and it may have been on the block as long as two hours after first seen there. Both said a second man was seen behind the wheel.
The man in the house was described as having a teardrop tattoo under his left eye, which is often associated with a gang.
