Since 1982, the Committee for Senior Housing Aid in Glencoe has been providing annual grants to Glencoe seniors who meet the program’s asset and income criteria to help them pay their property taxes or monthly rent. These grants enable economically disadvantaged Glencoe seniors to continue to participate in and enrich the life of the community where many have spent a significant portion of their lives. The program arose as an alternative to the failed attempt to bring some form of subsidized housing for low-income seniors to Glencoe.

Family Service of Glencoe has enabled the Committee to carry on this work by providing a variety of services including confidential screening of applications, a home visit interview with each applicant, bookkeeping and clerical services, and assistance in grant writing and fundraising campaigns. Family Service provides these services as part of their mission-driven efforts to meet the needs of community seniors and receives no financial reimbursement from the Committee.

Grant recipients benefit not only from the financial assistance, but from the personal, one-on-one relationship with an experienced FSG social worker who assesses needs, provides counseling, and makes referrals for other services as indicated.

Some of the members of the committee met with the Glencoe Clergy Association in February. “This is a very worthy cause,” said Rabbi Steven Lowenstein of Am Shalom. “We thank The Committee for Senior Housing Aid in Glencoe for making a difference in the lives of our seniors in need.”

The Village has been supportive; however, the program is funded primarily through private donors who value this opportunity to enrich the community by preserving its diversity and cultural heritage. Your tax-deductible contributions are critically important at this time to help the Committee continue this important work. Contributions may be sent to: The Committee for Senior Housing assistance in Glencoe, 675 Village Court, Glencoe, IL 60022-1613. Questions regarding eligibility and requests for additional information about this program can be addressed to Paul Wachowiak, LCSW, Family Service of Glencoe at (847) 835-1929.
