Wilmette police investigate burglaries

Police investigated a rash of burglaries over the weekend, all of which were to unlocked automobiles and garages. Most of roughly a dozen incidents took place in the neighborhood west of Green Bay Road, between Lake Avenue and the Evanston border, police said Monday.
Officers investigated a quartet of garage burglaries June 9, starting with a call to the 100 block of Prairie Avenue, where residents discovered their rear garage door and the overhead door had been left open. A mountain bike valued at $200 was stolen, and both unlocked vehicles had been rummaged through.
As police investigated that incident, a neighbor on the 100 block of Park Avenue told them his garage had been burglarized, and his bike, valued at $300 had been taken – but that the first resident’s stolen bike had been left next to the neighbor’s fence. While police were dealing with the first two cases, a second resident on the 100 block of Park said someone got into her garage and stole a pair of sunglasses valued at $250 from one of two autos inside. Both had been entered and searched.
The fourth burglary was also on the 100 block of Park; the residents’ unlocked garage was opened, both unlocked vehicles inside had been searched, but nothing appeared to have been taken.
Police noted that on June 9, a resident reported seeing nine people run from the north alley of Wilmette Avenue at Prairie, shortly after 9 p.m.
An officer on patrol June 10 discovered someone had entered a vehicle parked in an open garage on the 500 block of Park. Someone appeared to have gotten in to the vehicle, without having taken anything. Both automobiles in the garage were unlocked, police noted. A resident of the 800 block of Park. told police the same day that her unlocked garage and automobiles had been burglarized. About $8 in change was taken from one vehicle; the other was searched, as was the garage, but nothing was taken.
A resident of the 1700 block of Washington Avenue told police June 10 someone got into her unlocked garage, and searched two vehicles inside, taking $50 in cash from one, and $127 from the other.
Police investigated four other burglaries that day. Two were on the 200 block of 9th Street. In one case a patrol officer found two unlocked vehicles entered and searched without anything being taken. The second case, involving a third unlocked auto, was similar. The patrol officer also reported finding a car on the 900 block of Oakwood Avenue unlocked and searched, and another unlocked car on the 100 block of Woodbine Avenue was entered and searched.
