On Saturday, April 21, 2012, the Woman’s Board of The Hadley School for the Blind held its annual Benefit at Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette. This year’s gala, “Hadley’s a Great Bet” featured casino games as well as dinner stations, a wine auction and paddle auction.
The event was co-chaired by Woman’s Board President Susan Gould and Vicky Young, both of Winnetka. Hadley Woman’s Board Benefit Committee Members included Kay Moffitt of Winnetka, Treasurer Nancy Doyle of Winnetka, Lynne Montgomery of Northbrook, Jolene Wilson and Mary Nelson and Jennifer Wainwright, all of Winnetka, Sofia Kukulka and Carol Rasmus, both of Wilmette and Secretary Kim Peterson of Winnetka.
More than 160 guests played casino games including poker, roulette and blackjack for a chance to win prizes including Chicago sports tickets; a week’s stay at a lakehouse in Mears, Michigan; dinner for 10 by J & L Catering; a one-night stay for two at the Ritz-Carlton Chicago; and a two-night stay for two at the Ritz-Carlton Naples, Florida.
Guests also raised paddles and bid on wines to raise $160,000 for Hadley’s mLearning Initiative. mLearning, or mobile learning, is the delivery of learning content through mobile computing devices including, but not limited to, handheld computers, MP3 players, notebooks and mobile phones. Most eHadley (online) courses can be completed using mobile devices, including Android, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, and Apple mobile devices, enabling students to learn “on the go, on demand.” Hadley’s popular online seminars, Seminars@Hadley, are now available as a podcast, which can be downloaded and listened to on a mobile device. Additionally, three of Hadley’s parenting courses are now available on eReaders.
The Woman’s Board of The Hadley School for the Blind is the school’s single largest donor. Since its inception in 1953, the Woman’s Board has raised nearly $4 million dollars in contributions. In addition to the annual Benefit, the Board also raises funds through its annual Braille Holiday Card Sale and other events throughout the year.
