A Glencoe Public Safety patrol officer was injured Tuesday evening in a head-on collision.
Officer Ryan Windham, 34, sustained “a minor laceration, had his head stitched up, was checked over thoroughly and sent home,” Public Safety Chief Mike Volling said.
The three-year veteran was northbound on Vernon Avenue near Lincoln Avenue at 7:01 p.m., just after starting his shift, when Dorin Giurgiu, 48, of Glencoe, dropped a piece of paper on the floor of his minivan, Volling said.
Giurgiu apparently leaned over to pick it up and swerved across the Vernon center line into the path of the patrol car.
Giurgiu, of 348 Park Ave., refused treatment at the scene. He was ticketed for improper lane use and not wearing a seat belt. Air bags in both vehicles were activated.
Volling said the 2013 Ford Explorer was extensively damaged, and may be beyond repair. Giurgiu’s 2004 Toyota van was also significantly battered.~.
