Glencoe slates District 35 board

GLENCOE — It’s been almost 20 years, and Eddie Chez is still in grammar school.
And there’s no sign of graduation anytime soon.
Chez has just been slated by the Glencoe Caucus for a sixth term on the Glencoe School District 35 Board, where he’s served since 1993, the year President Bill Clinton began his first term.
“I feel that I now have experience and an institutional knowledge that’s of value,” the lawyer/accountant said Friday.
“We’re going to be hiring a new superintendent in the next few years, and I think I can be of value in the search, and in the transition.”
Superintendent Catherine Crawford isn’t leaving until June of 2015, but for Chez, that’s a moment of time. He’ll be well into his 22nd year by then.
Unlike the branch of the caucus that handles the Glencoe Village Board, Park Board and Public Library Board, the school district caucus has no current tradition of a two-term limit. The members did not, however, okay Bob Bailey for a third term on the school board.
“Our candidates were outstanding,” caucus Co-chair Loree Sandler said Friday. “We could have kind of closed our eyes and thrown a dart, and been happy with whoever we landed on, they were that good.
“We didn’t want to end up with a board in four years that had very few children in the district,” she added.
One of the new candidates slated is Julie Ackerman, who has a third-grader and fifth-grader, and is a patent lawyer who graduated cum laude from Northwestern University Law School after graduating with honors in chemistry from Colgate. She’s been active in the PTO, and says her strengths are “analyzing problems and working corroboratively, which I think will be an asset to what is a well-functioning School Board already.”
Slated for a second term is Marc Glucksman, Ph.D., chairman of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department of Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago.
It’s hard to break into any board in Glencoe, Sandler noted. “In the deliberations, somebody said we have diversity in Glencoe: We have doctors and lawyers.”
The second new candidate slated widens the diversity beyond law and medicine, all the way to banking. Steven Fradkin is president of the Corporate and Institutional Business Unit of Northern Trust.
The fifth slated candidate is Nancy Shaw, an executive marketing coach who recently took over as Board president from Chez. She asked for the one available two-year term, and got it.
