Wilmette police said a man who apparently reeked of cigarette smoke robbed a Plaza Del Lago store Wednesday morning, getting away with $200.
According to police, the man walked into the Yellow Bird Stationery store about 10:50 a.m. on May 16, handed the clerk a note demanding money and claimed to be armed with the knife. The man didn’t show the knife, however.
After taking the money, he left the store and walked north. Police officers searched the entire plaza on Sheridan Road, but were unable to find him.
Police describe the robber as a white male in his early 20s, standing 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighing about 160 pounds. He had short darker brown hair and wore a red zip-up hooded sweatshirt with the word “life guard” printed on the back. He also wore darker brown khaki shorts.
“Additionally,” police reported, “the offender had a strong odor of cigarette smoke.”
