Just when it seemed like New Trier’s special season was slipping away, the Trevians turned the corner with a 59-41 win over St. Rita at the City/Suburban Showdown at Proviso West on Saturday.
“It seems like everything in this world happens for a reason,” New Trier coach Scott Fricke said. “We were struggling and now it feels like we are back and hungry going into the postseason.”
St. Rita senior Tony Hicks has been one of the state’s most consistent players, averaging nearly 25 points per game, but he managed only six, shooting 2-for-12 from the field.
“Those ups and downs are going to happen,” Fricke said. “It’s a long season. It’s more of a mental thing at this point in the season.”
New Trier senior Connor Boehm scored 16 and grabbed 11 rebounds, despite facing a sizeable challenge against St. Rita’s 6-foot-7 freshman Myles Carter.
“Obviously he blocked a couple of my shots, he’s enormous,” said Boehm. “I was able to get some things done. I’ve just been concentrating on rebounding and playing defense as well as possible.”
The game was close for a quarter, but then St. Rita fell into a deep funk, managing only one field goal in 13 minutes of play.
“I was really happy with the way we guarded,” Fricke said. “They had 25 points in the third quarter and Hicks usually gets that by himself.”
“I had a couple bad games,” Boehm said. “We always knew we could play like this. We are right on track to do good things.”
Dominique Matthews led St. Rita with 12 points and Treston Forbes and Charles Matthews each scored seven. Vic Law grabbed nine rebounds for the Mustangs (14-10).
David Bragiel and Steven Cook each scored 10 for the Trevians and Austin Angel added nine. New Trier (20-5) committed just seven turnovers in the game.
“It just seems like we went out and were playing harder today,” Bragiel said.
